Treatment Approaches
CBT addresses the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behavior. When anxious or depressed, thinking becomes distorted — overly negative, catastrophic, or self-critical. CBT identifies these patterns and develops more balanced, realistic ways of thinking. Practical, structured, and focused on what's maintaining distress. Effective for anxiety, panic, OCD, depression, and chronic stress.
ACT builds psychological flexibility — the ability to be present with difficult feelings while still moving toward what you value. Rather than eliminating anxiety or negative thoughts, ACT changes your relationship with them. Combines mindfulness with values-based action. Particularly effective for avoidance patterns, chronic anxiety, and rumination.
Psychodynamic therapy examines how past experiences — especially early relationships — shape current patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, it explores the deeper picture: relationships, inner life, recurring dynamics. Effective for people who keep finding themselves in the same painful situations and want to understand themselves more deeply.
Trauma-focused approaches help the nervous system process experiences that are stored as threat rather than memory — showing up as flashbacks, panic, hypervigilance, or emotional numbing. Work begins with stabilization and grounding before any processing. May incorporate EMDR, somatic approaches, or narrative processing depending on presentation. Effective for PTSD, complex trauma, and accumulated emotional wounds.

Clinical Approach
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
Rooted in attachment theory — the science of how we bond with the people we love. Most relationship conflicts aren't about the surface issue but about deeper needs: Do you see me? Can I count on you? EFT maps the emotional cycle keeping partners stuck and builds new patterns of reaching and responding. Highly effective for emotional distance, recurring conflict, and trust repair after infidelity.
A research-based approach developed from decades of studying what makes relationships succeed or fail. Identifies specific behaviors that predict relationship breakdown — criticism, contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling — and builds skills to replace them. Emphasizes friendship, shared meaning, and de-escalation. Particularly useful for couples with entrenched conflict patterns or high emotional reactivity.
Applies CBT principles to relational dynamics. Examines the beliefs, assumptions, and interpretations each partner brings to the relationship — including how prior experiences shape current reactions. Helps couples identify distorted thinking patterns about each other and develop more accurate, compassionate attributions. Useful for couples where miscommunication or negative assumptions are a central driver of conflict.
Explores the stories couples tell about themselves and their relationship — including the dominant narratives that define problems as permanent or central to identity. Helps partners separate the problem from the person and co-author a new, more workable story about who they are together. Particularly useful when couples feel their relationship has been "defined" by conflict, betrayal, or a difficult chapter.
